A Young Woman's View

A poem written by a Newcastle teenager, Emelie Cooper, was a highlight of the 2013 Sunset Service at the Civic Park Memorial Grove on the Eve of Anzac Day.

Emelie's poem, which she read to the assembled crowd, was both moving and insightful.

About 100 people gathered in the twilight to quietly remember those whose names are recalled on plaques within the grove. Candles were lit and the traditional commemorations  of Anzac Day were observed.

You can read Emelie's poem in full below,  and view photos taken during the service on the 'Photos' page of this website.

BROTHERS IN ARMS
by Emelie Cooper

As we stride, with pride
Brothers, side by side
Shoulder to shoulder.
We stand proud and tall

And we remember our
Mates – who didn’t
Make it At all.

Inside we fear
That death is near.
We are so far away
In a land,
unknown to us all.

Shivering hands
blue with cold,
the truth untold.

Old eyes in a young head,
So many visions,
So many dead….
