Grove Improvements

The community and services committee set up to rejuvenate the War Memorial Grove in 2011 has been working closely with members of Newcastle City Council staff to carry out immediate improvements to the park.

There are also long-term plans to redesign the park, better placement of its commemorative plaques and to make the park more accessible from Laman Street, which is currently being redesigned (work in progress as at April, 2013)

Committee members met with staff on site in the grove to review the latest concept drawings in late February, 2013.

Newcastle City Council has access to funding of $25,000 towards park improvements.

Areas already identified as needing attention include reworking of the water feature, replacement of the Lone Pine, which has been damaged over time (stock is available to incorporate another pine in its place) and replanting of low growth around the plaques.

Volunteers from the First New Lambton Heights Garden Club, which was initially instrumental in designing the park, have members who are currently engaged in plant maintenance.
