Candles for the Fallen
The Sunset and Candlelighting Ceremony in the War Memorial Grove, Civic Park, has become a significant part of Anzac observations in Newcastle.
In 2016, the fifth year it has been held, several hundred people gathered at dusk on Anzac eve to remember those whose names are recorded on plaques within the grove, and others who have died in world conflicts. The ceremony is arranged by the grove's Preservation Group, led by Chairperson, Mr Gerry Bailey, who also welcomed those attending.
Students from the Hunter School of Performing Arts participated and special mention was made of two World War ! soldiers, Private George Fleming and Private Thomas Bell. The students were supported by teacher, Mrs Debbie Sutton. Also from the school was bugler, Josie Tarren, who sounded the Last Post and Reveille.
Rev. Douglas Haley, the minister of St Andrew's Church, which borders the park, also participated in the ceremony.
Master of Ceremonies was Mr Stephen Finney OAM.
